A 400-student private school in Nagpur decides it wants to "go digital." The principal starts receiving demos from school management software vendors. The implementation timeline is six months.
The school signs up. Six months later, they are using the attendance module and the fee collection module. The rest is configured but unused. This outcome is common because "going digital" is treated as a single transformation rather than a sequenced set of changes. Schools that digitize successfully do it incrementally - they pick the highest-friction, highest-value problem first, solve it, stabilize, and then expand.
Start With What Hurts the Most
The right place to start is not the most impressive feature. It is the process that currently consumes the most time, produces the most errors, or generates the most disputes.
For most schools in India, this is one of three things:

"Our system does everything." Systems that claim to cover every school function typically do everything at a superficial level.
